Almost globally, the base currency is the copper piece (c or ¢). These same states that use the copper piece also accept the silver piece (s) and gold piece (gp). Some of the larger countries see validity in a platinum piece (pp) and, of course, any country will trade for platinum if only at a price different than the legal exchange rate.

Exchange Rates
10c = 1s
100s = 1gp
1,000gp = 1pp

Fortunes
As people tend to do, they save money for the future. Sums of money are variously regarded as “small” or “large” by arbitrary standards. For example, a merchant would consider anything that would take only a handful of years to procure as a small fortune. These are roughly:

  • small fortune, 320 gp
  • modest fortune, 2,500 gp
  • large fortune, 16,000 gp
  • royal fortune, 150,000 gp

Magic Items
Armor and weapons imbued with magic tend to be sold at a price proportionate to the level of magic with which the item has been enhanced. The original price of the mundane object is usually ignored, but gets added for weaker magical objects:

  • Level 1: 40 gp
  • Level 2: 70 gp
  • Level 3: 120 gp
  • Level 4: 260 gp
  • Level 5: 310 gp

  • Level 21: 10 pp
  • Level 22: 14 pp

  • Level 24: 40 pp
  • Level 25: 50 pp

Over 2,000 gp, prices only estimate what could be bartered (diplomacy check) for such items. It is rare to find anyone selling weapons or armor of that power.

Ritual Components
There are hundreds of rituals known to mortals. A complete list of the prices of their components would be unwieldy but several representative or significant rituals can be noted. Representative ritual costs have a stated level:
